Hiking the AT
So I started reading a new blog today that is chronicling the adventures of Andrew, Jennifer and Boss as they attempt to hike the Appalachian trail. They expect to be hiking from May to October. I love reading these stories. Its doubtful I would ever attempt it, but I have to admit I'm drawn to the idea of leaving my job for six months to hike the trail.
These brave hikers are using an really neat device designed to help rescuers find them in an emergency. Its called SPOT messenger. In addition to the rescue bit, it allows you to leave an electronic 'bread crumb trail' that allows friends and family to track your progress. I think it's a great idea and a really practical device for the trip they're attempting. And, for someone like me who will enjoy following their progress, it will be interesting to watch. But are there safety concerns to consider? I'm not sure I would add the link to an open site because it would help someone with less then honest intentions pretty easily track your position.
That said, I wish them all the luck they'll need to be successful on their walk!
